Downey Residence
Hidden from Westcoast Road, nestled among Sitka Spruce, this two-storey natural resource-based home is a model of self-sustainability. A modern Westcoast dwelling with rustic details, this butterfly-shaped building is sited to maximize natural light, access to the outdoors and spectacular views up Juan de Fuca Strait while minimizing the home's footprint.
Basalt gateposts and stone path lead through a native plant courtyard to a breezeway framed with fir columns. Vertical-grain fir soffits and brackets, sandstone facings, cedar shingles and board & batten siding compliment the native habitat.
The natural appeal continues inside, with vaulted fir ceilings and timberwork, double-height windows, two sandstone -and -fir fireplaces, fossilized tile and sustainable mahogany flooring, fir trims and maple cabinetry. The vaulted, airy main floor dining gallery and living room open via French doors onto a full-width deck with a built-in barbecue under a pergola, while abundant windows bring the outside in. The master bedroom, with it's own gas fireplace and private balcony feels perched in the treetops. This seismically designed structure incorporates these energy-efficient features:

In addition to Project of the Year and Best Single Family Custom Home over 3000 Square Feet, the Downey Residence also netted the award for Best Interior – Residential, Best Kitchen (New or Renovated) 150 to 250 Square Feet for JC Scott Design Associates and Città Construction.
